Potential Port Strike – October 1st
A potential port strike across the Gulf & East Coast ports on October 1st is looming closer as conditions appear increasingly likely.
The International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) are at an impasse over automation and wages (the current labor contract is set to expire September 30th). The ILA, the largest union of maritime workers in North America, has formally issued their 60-day notice, not to extend the current contract. If a new agreement is not reached by the end of September, the ILA will go on strike.
A strike of this magnitude will have a wide impact and will affect all import and export operations from Houston to Boston. Even a brief strike lasting a few days would cause operational disruptions and delay cargo ships into ports for several weeks.
Where we can, we are trying to expedite existing purchases arriving before the end of September in preparation for such a strike.
